A security alarm is a system designed to detect intrusion – unauthorized entry – into a building or area. Some alarm systems serve a single purpose of burglary protection; whereas combination systems provide both fire protection and intrusion detection. Integrated intrusion alarm systems may also be combined with video surveillance systems to automatically record the activities of intruders, and may also interface with access control systems for electronically locking and unlocking doors.
Security systems range from small, self-contained noisemakers ideal for a single business, to complex, multi-area systems with computer monitoring and control. It is common in retail environments to deploy exit monitor alarms necessary to add protection by signalling events such as the opening of an emergency exit door.
