Lock Out Safety – It’s the Law!
The control of hazardous energy is required under the health and safety legislation both federally and provincially.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act defines general duties of owners, employers, supervisors, workers, joint health and safety committees and contractors. The requirements found in Sections 25, 26, 27, and 28 of the Act apply to employers, supervisors and workers and impact on the requirements for control of hazardous energy. It is important that all workplace parties understand and comply with their duties under the Act.
Section 28(2) of the Act states that a worker not remove or make ineffective protective devices required by the regulation or his employer, without providing an adequate temporary protective device and when the need for removing or making ineffective the protective device has ceased, the protected device shall be replaced immediately.
